Testing the programming of your autopilot without risking an expensive drone has been perfected in various autopilot simulators which feed it simulated sensor inputs, including full plugins for traditional flight sims.

This is for 'training' an autopilot program. For training a human to fly, see RC flight sim.

[edit] Software in the Loop

SIL testing involves emulating the processing platform on a PC, and running new software or calibration settings in a test environment.

[edit] Hardware in the Loop

HIL testing involves feeding the real processing unit simulated sensor inputs to test its responses.
